The SAAM Donald “Donny” Farland JOAD Scholarship

The State Archery Association of Massachusetts is pleased to announce its annual Scholarship Program, renamed in 2025 to honor and thank our friend and former member, Donald Farland.

We named the scholarship to thank Donny for his years of mentorship, coaching, and volunteer service to Massachusetts’s youth archers and greater archery community. This board is incredibly grateful to Donny for his continued guidance and seemingly endless patience. We couldn’t do what we do without him.

Stay tuned, SAAM will accept applications for the 2026 Scholarship Awards at a date to be announced.

Requirements:

•  Applicant must be a resident of Massachusetts or an active member of a MA archery club and:
  • Have participated in at least one (1) SAAM sanctioned tournament in the year 2025. Bay State Games and Indoor Nationals are not SAAM sanctioned tournaments.
  • Or provide a written description of involvement in a JOAD program along with an essay about how archery has helped you.
• Applicant must be accepted to an accredited college, university, or trade school.
• Applicant must be no older than 22 years of age by December 31, 2026.

To Apply:

The applicant must provide the following:

1. A completed essay, which includes answers to the following questions:
   1. How has participation in archery influenced your attitudes and achievements?
   2. How has your training been influenced by tournaments and group training?
   3. What are your academic and career goals?
2. A complete overview of your student information (i.e., current high school/college, grades transcript, extra-curricular activities, etc.).
3. Two letters of recommendation. One must be from your archery coach or program leader. Recommendations may be sent separately.
4. A copy of acceptance letter (students already attending college or trade school, please supply a copy of your GPA or grades).
